Student visa renewal finance

Hello just a couple of questions in regards to renewing a student visa within Australia for a Taiwanese citizen (first time renewal). After checking Visa sc 572 Document CheckList website it doesn't state any thing about financial aspects although I have been told you need $20,000 in the bank before you even think about putting in for the visa. Everything else in the checklist is fine.
As i am the aus citizen, his partner and supporting him financially I have also found sites claiming I would need to earn 60k if we use me as the evidence of support which I don't, I am about 10k short of that.
Would it just be easier to put the 20k into his account and go with the visa that way and mention nothing about me or try with the less than 60k a year income from me instead?
Not sure which road would be best
Thank you ^_^

May I suggest that you consult one of the registered migration agents who posts on this forum, before you commit to a course of action?
