Passport application after citizenship ceremony

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I got an email from Home Affairs confirming I have an Australia Day citizenship ceremony! I'm very excited and relieved.

However, I have a question about applying for a passport. The email says to wait 10 days to apply, but I will be leaving for the UK on 11 Feb as my grandmother turns 90.

I had expected I might get an Australia Day ceremony and was planning to lodge an expedited passport application on the next working day to ensure I had it to leave the country.

Does anyone know whether the waiting 10 days to apply thing is a recommendation or a rule? If I waited, say, 5 days and then applied (which would still get me my passport in time for that hefty extra fee) would that still work?

Thank you!

I don't have personal experience of this, but many previous posters have applied the day after the ceremony for expedited processing and everything has gone smoothly.

I think the 10 days is a recommendation in case their systems aren't fully updated after the ceremony. But I've heard of many people doing it the next day and I submitted my own passport application only a few days after the ceremony without any problem.
