Just out of curiosity - If your RRV is coming up to expiry date, how soon can you lodge the renewal so that it basically never 'lapses' ?
Week out, month out? Obviously the further out you do it, is basically doing yourself a disservice because you still have 'travel time' on the current one?

If the application is rejected (there will be a reason) mostly want of some documents, proof etc. as its for 12 months, generally not an issue unless specific proof is missing. Anyway, your existing VISA is valid till its expiry date, (as per my discussion with IMMI visa office, some time back for similar query).

Having said that, if the new /renewal is granted, then you have to use that new visa. and its validity starts from the date of grant. it means, say, even if the existing visa has validity for further 2 months, but renewed visa is issued on a date much before (for 12 months and issued say 2 months before) existing visa expiry, the left over period of existing visa doesn't have any use. that means the net validity of your visa is reduced by 2 months.

earlier i got visa renewed in 1 day. (this was 5 years period)
say, applied today afternoon, before office closes (at least have 1-2 hrs before). Got visa next day first thing in the morning.
Even earlier occasion for 12 months extension, got it in 3 days time). Assuming you responded to all specific document requirements, (else it goes in loop)

But don't depend or count on my situation. have a judgement for yourself. Unless you are in planning of travel, you need not worry, even its expired as long as you are within Australia.
