Red face Kiwi applying for PR while partner on 461

Hi there guys,

My husband is from New Zealand and we have been living in Australia for almost 4 years now.
I recently received my 461 New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship Visa.
I understand that after 5 years of living in Australia, Kiwi's are able to apply for PR.
My question is, when my husband applies for PR, where does that leave me?
Am I able to also apply for PR with him, or do I simply stay on my 461 visa?
If so, when would I be able to apply for PR in Australia myself?

From what you have posted, yes.

If he's able to apply for a PR visa, he would include you in his application as a dependent.

Kiwis are NOT allowed to apply for PR after 5 years anymore. As of right now there's no way to get PR/citizenship if you arrived after 2016, and the last intake required the Kiwi to make over the "skilled wage" of something like $53,000 for five straight years to be able to apply. Who knows how tough the next intake will be, or how long we'll have to wait. Seems to be about 15 years between intakes.

Kiwis can obviously apply under any of the usual pathways and there are still some age and skill concessions available to 444 and 461 holders under the employer sponsored route.

Right, but you can no longer just wait five years like you used to.

What are the employee concessions? I have become a huge part of my 15 person company and am on 461 visa.

If you want specific advice about your possible visa strategies, it might pay you to consult a registered migration agent for an assessment.

Hello there,

I applied for my 189 NZ Stream in Dec 2019 and added my wife and son who currently live in Indonesia. So the answer is yes, you can be added to the application and you will get PR also meaning you can study and work as you wish. Hope this helps as I know their is not much on this forum regarding NZ 189 stream

Yes, you can be added to his PR application. My husband is a Kiwi and I have been on the 461 up until yesterday. We applied for the 189 NZ stream in Oct, and it was granted for both of us yesterday. Took 6 months flat. For him to apply alone it will cost $4000. To add you to the application it will be about $6000 total. I submitted all our police certs and medicals without being asked, so they didn't even assign me a case officer at all, they just approved it immediately after I sent through the final payment. Hope this helps!
