485 Visa, Civil engineering and project management

Hi everyone,

I am a Civil Engineer and just recently applied for the 485 visa (Graduate work stream). At the moment I hold a student visa that expires in October. I am doing an Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management but Iíve already completed a Diploma of Project Management and an Advanced Diploma of Program Management at Australian Pacific College (Brisbane campus) over the course of two academic years. Additionally Iíve already submitted an EOI for the 189 skilled visa with 85 points.

I want to apply for the graduate visa because I would like to enrol in a Professional year. This way I would be able to get my 189 visa points to 90.

Hereís the thing. Some people have told me that applying for this visa is a bad idea as both diplomas would not be considered closely related to my declared skill (Civil Engineer ANZSCO 233211). I completely disagree with this as project management forms a large part of the work for a civil engineer.

I am torn between pressing ahead with the application or withdrawing it (I would not want a visa rejection in my immigration history)

Does anyone know about a similar case where they were approved?
And could you provide some advice on what to do?

Thank you

Do you have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation and have you consulted a registered migration agent?

I do have a positive skills assessment as Professional Engineer in the occupation of Civil Engineer. I am doing this on my own. The agent that would usually assist with the student visa did advice not to do it, to instead apply for another student visa.

I am looking for some outside perspective and experience to make a decision

Hi, I am in a similar situation. Have you got any help from here?

I already got my skill assessment in Civil Engineering, did a Diploma of Project Management and am finishing an Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management. As a civil Engineer with 8 years of experience I am completely sure about the relationship between Management and Civil engineering, however, I am struggling with what is the best terminology and language to use to demonstrate to immigration the requirement of ®closely related®. I wouldn't like to get a negative outcome for my application. I know some successful cases and in particular one from a close friend of mine who is a Mechanical Engineer and did the same Diploma but she did it with a lawyer and he didn't want to give her the documentation of her application.

Any ot the registered migration agents who post on this forum could put you on the right track, if there is one.
