Canada / Australia??

Hi Guys,

Need suggestions / inputs from the members here. I am a HR Professional from India with over 7 yrs of experience. My husband is a marketing/advertising professional with around 7.5 yrs exp. We have a 4 yr old daughter going to a very good school in India and both of us are doing well in our careers. We were looking for immigration to Australia / Canada for a better lifestyle. We filed for Canada this year (it was our first choice) but the cap was filled for our NOC. We were not sure if our profession would be there in April or not so my consultant is filing my papers for state nomination (visa 190) in Australia.

We would like to know how difficult it will be to find out jobs in Australia? Or if my husband does his MBA / Exec MBA from a top Australian university, will that help? Do these universities provide placements? We do not want to take big risks as we have a small kid. Will it be possible that my husband lands there first, studies / finds job, settle things and then we move there?

What should be the approx. funds we should carry for initial survival? How racist Australia is?

I'm a Canadian who just relocated to Australia. I find the market and quality of life is better in australia only if you are able to secure employment in your field of work since life is expensive. If you are used to a certain quality of life in India, it will be difficult to get that level back if you need to make some career sacrifices when you get to Australia. Canada has no super (some employers do offer up to 4% matching contribution but it is not a requirement by law), higher taxes, lower cost of living but lower salary as well.

Canada is also very very competitive. The market is saturated with good people. The US recession did take a hit on us. Canadians alone are in competition with each other. immigrants with no local experience are often not viewed at the same level.

If you're in HR, recruitment agencies in Sydney seem to always be looking for good consultants, 80% of the ones I met were Brit expats. They also have this training program, you should check out the program from Michael page. It could be good for you.

Good luck in your decision!

I am in the middle of my job hunting so we'll see if mine was the right choice!

One note, your husband might have more difficulty than you since marketing requires local knowledge of the market, consumer tastes, trends etc etc whether in canada or australia.

I don't know much about Canada, but I lived in the US for six years and have lived in Australia for a bit over six years. Australia is much more expensive, but it is also a nicer place to live, especially if you don't like cold weather. Australians are generally very friendly and easy-going.

Thanks Yasmine. I am from India and in process of moving to Australia but then very recently got to know from some friends who have recently moved to Canada from Australia have mentioned about racism in Australia.
Have you ever experienced the same as you have also moved from US?

I haven't experienced any myself, but one does learn sad stories from the media in both US and Australia.
