Graduate-Skilled Visa Question

Hello,

I've recently been granted a Graduate Skilled (Temp) Residency visa under the nominated occupation of Music Teacher. I'm currently enrolled in a postgraduate program (Graduate Diploma of Graphic Design) starting next semester.

I am aware that if I work in an occupation that is closely related to Music Teacher, it would help accumulate points for my PR application. I was wondering whether it would count as a Professional Year if I've worked as a Graphic Designer (which is also on the SOL) for a year, in Australia, but nominated Music Teacher as my skill.

ie. Is being a Graphic Designer considered as a closely related skilled occupation to Music Teacher?

Many Thanks!

Hi Kazlr,

The relevant regulations state that “The applicant has been employed in Australia, in the applicant’s nominated skilled occupation, or a closely related skilled occupation”.

There are specific guidelines as to what is considered closely related. In my opinion you may find it a stretch trying to show that the occupation of graphic designer is closely related to the nominated occupation of music teacher.

Hi Kazir, I totally agree with Raul. Don't count on getting points as a Prof Year as a music teacher for studying graphic design. Can't you get a job as a music teacher? I am not 100% sure but maybe just home teaching would be taken into account, you only have to do 20 hours per week. I suppose, if you keep details of each student, when you attend, what time and what student, progress notes, tests, issue receipts to the parents and do your BAS statements as required, I can't see why DIAC wouldn't accept this. To make it look more like a business you might register a business name or even a proprietary limited company, although Pty Ltd might be a bit too much. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of a job? I'd be interested to hear.
Regards,
Dorota
