Am I missing something???

Heres the past:

I was in Australia working for under a year, while trying to sort out my visa, I overstayed a bridging E visa (didn't understand how the system worked... i'm an idiot, flat out).

So I headed back to California and applied to the TRA (didn't want the immi folks judging me on a skill they know anything about), received recognition for First Class Metal Machinist, and then sent a application book to 457 visa team. Received Nov. 16th 2009, request for health insurance Nov 22, accepted and pdf sent Nov 24.

Now the Question: WTF? I get that normally this is a 3 month process. However, is it just a sick joke in my head, why are they requesting the one thing that would lead me to believe that everything else is clear? Am I getting my hopes up? I checked the box in my application if I had health care: NO- (it reads)You will need to hold health insurance before your application can be granted.

Its killing me, why if there wern't any other issues, would they request this? I tend to over think situations based on a logical approach, do apply the "slow government non-rational" patch and get over it?

Cheers mates. Upfront thanks for your input.

For I was sort of reading that as you have your 457 but then see you may be just talking of the health cover bit of the application, hence

So assuming the hammer in the head is re the health cover which is a bigger deal in states, yep it is one of those requirements and especially quirky where an applicant is coming from a country like the UK that has a reciprocal Medicare health cover agreement with Oz.

The reason it is there is partially to prevent dodgy bros employers who previously had the responsibility from playing dodgier than usual, like telling Chinese etc., we need to take this huge ammount out of your pay for health insurance premium - the way around it being to make it something for employees to do like most Aussies do [far less of Employer pays here like US].

The way around it for you is likely to do a couple of things;
1. see if an Australian co. will issue a policy prior to your arrival and some may, especially smaller companies - Health Insurance, Private Health Cover, Home & Contents Insurance, Private Health Insurance - Australian Unity and Private Health Insurance & Health Cover ? nib Health Funds being a couple that have limited covers from as low as about $30/m.
Private Health Insurance Australia - iSelect is a site that compares all insurers.

2. if no Aussie co. wants to play ball until you're here, see about taking out travel insurance for two/three months with an extension option if you need it to bridge approval time.

Either way, you'll need to have a certificate to use with your application.

IMAN Australian Health Plans - Health Plans for Temporary Residents Working in Australia is another site I've seen people commenting on re getting a temporary cover.

Have you had any feedback from Immi re overstaying the Bridging Visa and what that may mean re re-entry?

Sorry Wanderer... let me clarify. I got Australian health insurance ($66/mo) after the request. Hell, the insurance company has sent me and email requesting WHEN I will need my coverage to start!?!?

Funny thing, the health insurance isn't my issue... They want my money, they're going to be efficient. My issue is WHY Auz Immigration has requested health coverage when obviously there are other issues that are holding up their decision. Is there a fax back-up on way to the death-star or something? The sarcasm is thick, but its the only way I can make sense of this (besides equivalency with good 'ol US politic efficiency).

Nothing on the overstay.

Cheers, D

You've been requested to show evidence of the health coverage because it is a condition for application of and granting the visa, fullstop.

Hi BigD,
I suspect you are talking about a re-entry ban. Whether there is a ban depends on the circumstances of overstaying and departure. The ban may not apply to you. Also, it may be that the ban applies to you but it is being overlooked, in such circumstances the visa is liable to cancellation at a later stage. If it is cancelled whilst you are in Australia you will have a chance to argue your points whether with DIAC or Tribunal. If they cancel your 457 prior to arriving then you just have to accept it and lose your money. Give us more details about the overstaying (when substantive visa expired, when you applied for BVE, when BVE expired and when you departed) and we can share some more thoughts about the ban. I should be able to tell you whether the ban applies or not and you might sleep better.
hope it helps
