Hi everyone,

I've been in Australia for 3 years now. My mum and dad applied for a retirement visa last year - for those that don't know this involves paying $100k to cover future medical expenses etc. and the main reason for coming over is to have the support of myself and my sister (who also live in Oz) in their old age.

Unfortunately my dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer recently - it was caught in the very early stages and with careful observation he should be fine. Obviously this has caused great worries as it looks like their visa application is now compromised to say the least.

I've read many posts that state that it's virtually impossible to say what will happen. I fully understand this so I'm not asking for opinions on what people may think will happen but instead I was hoping that someone can give me concrete examples on what has happened to them with regard to illness and the medical.

I'm sure after trawling through the Internet that a few shared experiences will help many people to better understand the possible consequences of their illness. I'll certainly try to do my bit by updating you on my father's progress.

I would really appreciate some help here, it's a very worrying time for the whole family.

TIA Alan.

Hi Alan and welcome to the forum.

I can appreciate that you and your family do have some concerns, not just the visa situation and I hope your father fares well with his health.

No personal experience myself though I do know that one of the moderators on PomsInOz Australia Migration & Expat Forum went through some visa/legal gymnastics with her mum a few years back, Mum now 89 I believe and even when getting the visa she apparently was sound enough generally though just having the body of an older person.

If you sign up to poms and hit on Gollywobbler [not hard to find on the Migration section] and send her a PM , I'm sure she'll be happy to tell you anything she knows even if she has me excommunicated! - do give her a hello from me.

There is also a government enquiry still running on migration health and the difficulty with the system.
Aside from it being reputed that Australia discriminates on health whereas the Oz government is allegedly a signatory to a UN agreement banning that, the main issue I see for most people is that as in your parents case hefty visa application fees have to be paid and medical decisions come after - not so good! and there does need to be a better way, ie. doing medicals up front and then if it is no go refund fees paid less actual costs incurred in processing.

Gollywobbler or Gill [Gillian] will be full bottle on that and has made a submission to the enquiry.

Good luck with your Dad and he having had the cancer removed, hopefully it'll not be something he'll be refused on.

Best Wishes,

Many thanks Wanderer - it seems that it's all down to how much a specialist thinks the treatment will cost in the future. So it's good news that it's not a straightforward no and it's all down to numbers (as is most things in life I suppose). Thanks again, Alan
