pls help

hi all, ive been looking to immigrate to australia for years i went over when i was 15 im now 23 and desperate to get back. i have family over there but not wanting to burden them with sponsering me. i have a bachelors degree in interior design which i sat through distance learning as i wanted to work and not get into huge debt. the place i was working was laura ashley just as a sales advisor but went for the interior design job which i got. i have been doing that for 18 months now. the job title is interior designer, i go to clients homes and sell them the laura ashley products, design their interiors etc. although i dont use c.a.d and use floorplans which were some of the modules in my ba course. is this job sufficient as far as at least 1 years closely related field goes according to immi ? but also this website i looked at (visabureau) says i need to be working 3 out of 4 years, so can someone please enlighten me, i think im looking at too many.
as far as i can count

age: 30
job: 50 + 10 experience
english: 25 once i take the test although im a native english speaker

anything ive missed cos im 5 points out

Hello Lyndsay, and welcome to the forum,

You've got your points assessment about right except for the experience 10 points and the VB reference to 3 out of previous 4 years is what you need to have to get points for specific experience.

You can reference that on the eligibility points assessment table - Skilled – Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175)
There are a few other issues though and first and foremost will be if your distance education degree is of an acceptable level and if it is from a reputable university that could be OK.
The points table Occupation Link will take you to the SOL and against Interior designer you'll find the Assessing Authority reference, their details at rear of SOL or use A-Z Occupations List - Australian Skills Recognition Information

So you'll have 105 points until you get the extra experience and without something like a second language assessment you'll not make the 120 totally independent migration.
You should not look upon a family sponsorship as being too much of an imposition and more a means to just have a lower points requirement to 100

Most family I'd expect if on friendly terms to be more than happy to help.

The other problem you face however will be when you want this to occur for your occupation will have a low priority and you can have a look at the sticky thread in the top of the section re changes that are happening and priority system/capping of numbers which will put many people on an indefinite number of years wait.

To give yourself an alternate chance, you're plenty young enough to consider a WHV - Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) and if you do some regional work you can apply for a second WHV, a total of two years.
That may be long enough for you to find an employer eligible and prepared to sponsor you or maybe even romance and a partner.

Employer Sponsorship is the top priority and would be the potentially quickest route for immigration and you could to give yourself a few other strings to your bow, still apply for a 176 visa that would remain in the system while you were on an employer sponsorship temporary residency visa 457.
If you got lucky and found an employer able to sponsor you for permanent residency - an ENS or RMS they can be fee free if you have already paid for a 176 application.

There is also a Skilled – Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclass 487) if the family is living in a regional area or you can get State/Territory sponsorship [ you would need to check their lists at the time] and advantage of that over a 176 is that it is an onshore visa so you can get a bridging visa until the 487 is processed and do not need to leave Australia for granting of it, both those aspects applicable to a 176 offshore visa, ie. no bridging visa and you need to be offshore for granting of a 176.

So a few options you can look at in coming over on a WHV.

thanks very much for your info, i just dont know where to begin. i had a look at employer sponsership in victoria as thats where my family are and 1 was on it, design institute of australia, do i contact them directly? also i cant find the sticky thread reguarding changes, where abouts is it? i counted out family sponsership because i thought it would be too much hassle for them on their half with all the information they have to give, or its in quite straight forward. anyway thanks again

Hi Lyndsay

I read your question and the reply from Wanderer. As advised, the sponsorship from a family member is not a traumatic thing. A completed form is required and the documentation that shows they are an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident, this is usually a certified copy of the visa in the passport or Aus passport. Also necessary to provide a letter confirming employment of the sponsor or spouse of sponsor. A famliy member cannot act as a sponsor if they are recieving some State Benifits. Remember they are stating that they will look after you for basic needs for a period of up to 2 years, and if they are on state benifits how can they then support someone else.

Qualifications / occupations that are awarded 50 points can only then claim 5 points for work experience, and these points can only be claimed if you have 3 yrs work relevant work experience.

You have quite a few options open to you so good luck.

hi thanks for the reply, i thought my cousin might be able to sponser me but it looks like it would have to be my aunt and uncle although i think they are retired, not sure, so that might be that out the window!

Hi Lynday

A cousin can sponsor if they are living in a 'designated area'. A retired aunt / uncle can act as sponsor if they are of independent means and not getting all sorts of state benifits.

I'm not too sure where you have got the Design Institute of Australia from and if you want to check re acceptance of qualifications that'll be through Vetassess - http://www.vetassess.com.au/
And a good idea to know about that prior to even coming out on a WHV.

With Employer Sponsorship, you'll not need family sponsorship as that would only be for the independent stream of visas [ and likely a long long wait on processing ]

hi i got it from the immi website i clickd on Australian Skills Recognition Information interior design and scrolled down and under the VETASSESS bit there was the design institute of aus. my aunt and uncle have money in the bank, he was a partner in a big railway business and sold his half so they do have money, but i would rather my cousin if possible could sponser me but cousin wasnt on the list i was looking at. they all live in bacchus marsh in melbourne, is that a designated area? what is the best website to look at as they say different things, i really appreciate all the info you are giving me, i will also look further into the whv.

Aha!, see you've got that down the bottom of Interior Designer 2533-17 - Australian Skills Recognition Information and they're not the assessing authority and that is still Vetassess.
The Institute is like any occupational association and they are usually formed for optional registration of people with particular occupations, a bit like an occupation club you could say.

You'll find regional and designated areas @ General Skilled Migration , Victoria being anywhere for family sponsorship.

As for websites you cannot really go wrong with Department of Immigration & Citizenship because the Immigration department is the ultimate authority for issuing visas [ other than an Appeals tribunal ] and as you're finding, they have many links, some of the sections on general info as well.
The State government sites linked to for sponsorship also have quite a bit of general information.

There's also info overload and you probably want to focus a bit on best way to Australia in the time frame you want if that is your objective.
If it is, what I'd suggest to you is:
1. Look at qualification assessment and see what it is possible to get out of Vetassess re your degree being OK.
[ You'll want to have a positive qualification assessment to pursue your career in Australia by any means ].
2. Perhaps also consider doing a CAD course for no doubt about its role not just in the future for it's already here and you could find there'll be employers who may either expect a designer to be CAD proficient or it will be viewed as a great advantage.
Doing a course in the UK will also give you time to get more experience and use of CAD training in your current work.
3. I reckon your best bet will be to seek an employer sponsorship [ not always easy but if you can get work with a company while on a WHV, that'll help] , and to that end, definitely consider coming out on a WHV.
4. Be prepared on arrival to go and get your hands a little roughed and dirty doing three months regional work or WWOOF Australia so as you qualify for a second WHV - a good change of experiences and great way to see the country too.
[ That'll enable you to have ~18 months left to get some ID work and by 3-6 months you should have a good idea of a company and they of you so as you can raise with them employer sponsorship - so if a company is not prepared to do so you have time to look for another job and do that a few times over if need be]

I base the above also on not having found ID on the Vic. State Sponsorship List [ though did not check regionally - far less demand for ID in regional areas too ]. and though family sponsorship may be an option it is going to be a long time if ever waiting for processing given the low priority.
Though you could get a bridging visa from a WHV for a 487 if eligible, being on a bridging visa you may find companies loathe to employ you because of the uncertainty.
