Medicare eligibility- 309

I'm trying to find information on medicare, and I'm not sure if I'm just not with it tonight or if the information is actually this obscure, but I don't know if I'm eligible or not yet. I applied offshore for my 309 visa and it was approved. Since it is provisional, can I apply for medicare right when I get there (next month)? Or do I have to wait the year and some odd months until I get my permanent visa.

Yes, you can apply for Medicare as soon as you are onshore.

Hi Sheabu -

As you have applied for a permanent visa for Australia (a combined 309/100 application includes an application for the subclass 100 visa, which is a permanent visa) you are eligible for Medicare. A key issue is to answer the question they will ask, "Do you intend to reside in Australia?" with a "Yes." Important not to say anything that would make them think that you have anything other than plans to permanently reside in Australia. Make sure to take plenty of evidence of your valid visa application too.

Often the lower-level folks at Medicare aren't knowledgeable about visa/Medicare issues, so you may have to work your way up the ladder there and get up to a manager or some higher level where they've had a bit more training in this area.

Hope this helps -

Best,

Mark Northam

Hi Sheabu.

I had my 309 granted, and I had no problem getting registered with medicare once I entered the country last week, I think they even back date it from the date of entrance.
