Apply for Tax File Number(TFN) during Initial Landing

Hi,
I am granted Visa 175 which requires my initial landing by 17 May. But I am not ready to settle down in Australia before 2011. So, I plan to make my initial landing in Darwin in this April and spend one week there. I need your advice for the following questions. (1) do I need to apply for TAX File Number this time? or I can register TFN next year after I move in Australia? (2) Do I need make anything else in Darwin to activate the PR Visa after I clear my custom at airport? Looking forward to your advices.

No Jason, you do not need a TFN until you start working and you actually have a month after commencing employment to provide it to an employer, so no great rush needed.
I think you'll also need to have an address, even a temporary one to apply.

And all you need to do to for activating your visa is enter the country.
You do not even need to stay a week and weather for Darwin in April would make me want to leave on the very next flight or even get a cheap flight to a more southern destination.
If you're coming via Asia, Welcome to AirAsia.com, The World's Best Low-Cost Airline have cheap flights from KL to the Gold Coast or Perth and Welcome To Tiger Airways Singapore to Perth.

Hi Wanderer,
Very appreciate your prompt reply. I noted that the new TAX rule starting from July 2009 requirs all Aus. residents to file in their oversea income and no exemption on it. I wonder if any impact on the new coming PRs.

I am from Singapore. Darwin is the nearest city for me to land in Australia. I just take a short break there. May get a car driving around. The weather in Darwin is similar to Singapore’s. I should be ok. But it is terribly hot this year.
It is great idea to get a cheap flight to other cities. I shall bear this in mind.
Cheers,
Jason

Any Tax laws will apply to Australian permanent residents from the time you take up residency.
