A full UK drivers license will be OK for driving in Australia as a visitor.
It is only when one has a visa for permanent residency that an Australian Licence is necessary, details along with other stuff @
Things to do First

You'll likely need a bank account in Australia for wages to be paid into and you can apply online even before you leave if you like - ANZ one bank - ANZ - Travel and foreign exchange - Foreign Currency Rates & Currency Converter

Another tip for WHV people is if you're looking for some work initially to build up travel funds consider settling in one location for six months or so as that can make tou eligible for residency for taxation purposes and a saving on tax of several thousand $$$ - have a look in personal section of Australian Taxation Office Homepage and look for threads in this section and also travel re WHVers for I've posted on it previously.
