Hi,

I needed the medical and x-ray in the UK in 2004 for a 457 application and 2007 for my residency application.

What you want to do is download and printout the relevant 160 and 26 forms if you haven't already. Read them carefully and fill out the sections that you are required to. Be careful though as there are some parts you must fill out in front of the doctor or radiographer.

What you need to do then is book your test and x-ray from the list of approved practitioners which is available on the website. What I would recommend is to have the x-ray first so that you can take the results to the doctor for the medical.

Have the radiographer fill in the relevant sections and then seal the form and the x-rays into an envelope for you to transfer. Make sure the envelope is well sealed and stamped at the flaps as otherwise it may be rejected. This happened to me in 2004 and I had to kick up a right fuss at the hospital to make them perform another test for free. Alternatively you can have the hospital make the transfer, but still make sure you watch the radiographer seal the envelope and stamp it.

When you see the doctor give them the x-ray or let them know when it will be received if it hasn't already. Luckily using a doctor from the approved practitioners list should mean they know what they are doing for your medical. Fill in the remainder of the form in front of the doctor and then leave it with them. At no point should you ever be given your results, it is up to the doctor to submit them directly to the department.

Whereabouts are you in the UK? I used a hospital and a Doctor in Southampton even though I was in London as the cost was much less even with the added distance to travel. I had them done on the same day hence why I was able to take the x-ray to the doctor.

If you follow the instructions re the request, all will be in order including it being medical people who forward medical results.

My medical professor told us that if you want to see your health records, you may be asked to submit your request in writing. It's a good idea to state the dates of the records that you want to see and to send the letter by recorded delivery. You should also keep a copy of your letter for your records and own copy..
