defacto visa

Hi new on here so go easy!

Eventually want to go down defacto visa route but need to get the 12 months co habiting condition first, I intend getting a 12 month tourist visa and we will then cohabit and live as a couple, if that all goes smoothly we will apply for the defacto visa, is this the right way to progress with the visa??, I cant think of any other way that we can be together for 12 months but dont want to waste that 12 months if there is a better route, we have been partners for over 12 months already but only via email/MSN and holiday visits, which I know doesnt count for the 12 month requirement.

thanks

Hi there,

Australia only has 3 month tourist visas. You can apply for a new one, but you will have to leave the country in order to activate the new one. Also, you will not be able to undertake paid work on a tourist visa, so you would have to save up a lot of money in order to support yourself (with regards to shared financials, which is a requirement in a de facto partnership) for the 12 months.

Which country are you from? If eligible, you can apply for an Australian Working Holiday Visa and live with your partner for 12 months. On the last day, apply for the De Facto visa.

Hope this helps,
Eva
