Asylum in Australia

Hey everyone,

I have a few questions about asylum in Australia. I know someone who is in Australia on a student visa. He started his school a few months ago. Now he wants to apply for Asylum based on religious grounds. My questions are:

1- What is the overall procedure for asylum application?
2- How long does it take for him to get his asylum from the day he applies?
3- What kind of status/visa would he hold if he gets approved?
4- When and how can he get his Permanent Residency after he gets his asylum?
5- What about citizenship? How long does it take to get/apply for that after the asylum approval? What is the overall procedure and timeline to get citizenship from the time you apply for asylum (if approved)?

Anyone had a similar immigration path/experience?

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks guys!

There's an Immi fact sheet on seeking asylum.
Australian Immigration Fact Sheet 61. Seeking Asylum within Australia
Might be best place to start research.
Citizenship requires four years of residence - Australian Citizenship – Becoming an Australian Citizen but best to take one step at a time.

Thanks Wanderer! We just want to know what the overall path for getting Citizenship through Asylum is. One thing we can't really figure out is what is your visa status once your Asylum case is approved? I heard it is permanent Protection Visa. Is that the same as Permanent Resident status? Or are you supposed to apply for permanent residency a certain time after you get your protection visa? do you become eligible for citizenship 4 years after your permanent Resident status is issued or after you get your protection visa?

Applying for citizenship is a separate process to visa applications/granting and you would do well to read the information on it.
I'd assume the use of word permanent for PPV means permanent residency is attached to a PPV, though there could be conditions attached as there are for all visas.
Best to contact Immi for further info.
