Student Visa with a DUI offence

I was arrested last summer in Canada (really big mistake, im not that type of person) for DUI. I am going in exchange next semester in Australia and I was wondering if some of you know if this offence will prohibit me from getting a student visa.

I looked at the notion of "good character" and it seem ok but I want to know if you have a personal experience with this matter.
