Visa type

Hi,

I am currently living and working in Melbourne on a 457 Visa, and I am about to start my application for permanent residency (if possible).

I have been looking at the different types of Visas, and I find it very confusing, so I am considering hiring an immigration agent, but before spending money on that, I thought I would try asking for advice.

Here is my history/situation:
- I have a Swedish passport
- Arrived in Australia 7 Sep 2006 on a working holiday Visa
- Started working as a web developer 1 March 2007
- I was on a bridging visa after the working holiday visa expired, not sure how long but at least 3-4 months of that time was spent not being allowed to work (a visit back to Sweden was also made)
- 13 October 2008: Subclass 457 (with 8107 work limitation) visa was granted, valid 4 years.

I am still working for the same employer, and will likely continue to do so long term.

I believe a sponsorship can be arranged, but I would like to know all available options.

Thank you for your advice, it is much appreciated.

Your options are really only sticking with employer sponsorship, applying for permanent residency if both you and the employer are eligible and the employer agreeable or looking at independent skilled visa and aside from your eligibility depending on qualifications you have and getting them assessed as OK, it is likely a longer process for you and could even be a problem getting sufficient points.
Immigration regs are also in the midst of change, a sticky thread at top of the section with links and some comments.

If you have a good relationship with your employer and can get employer sponsorship PR approved I think I'd be heading that way if I was you.
The key eligibility requirement is to either have two years of employment with your employer in your current position or something like having qualifications and three years of experience.
Have a look at Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 121/856)

Whereas your employer may want to use an agent your application would be relatively simple if you meet eligibility requirements.
