Employment status of sponsor?

Hi all,

My partner (Spanish) and I (Australian) have started the process of gathering documents and filling in forms, with the intention of lodging a de facto spouse visa application for him in the coming months.

I'm a little worried about the requirement that I provide documents showing evidence of my employment status for the past two years because I haven't been employed for the last two years - I've been in Spain, studying and falling in love

Prior to that I was working in a bank.

Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this? Does anyone have any advice about what sort of information I should provide in place of employment status? For example, degrees, previous work experience?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Hi Lucy

i have just applied for my partner visa and my fiance is currently unemployed. We looked into this and spoke to immigration and found this info:

Sponsorship undertaking / Assurance of Support
When we assess the sponsor's ability to meet his/her sponsorship obligations we take various elements into account (the sponsor's current/past/future employment and housing situation, family support in Australia, savings the sponsor and applicant may have, the applicant's English language skills, the applicant's employment prospects in Australia). A statement written by the sponsor including supporting documents will help your case officer to make an assessment of this element.

Under certain circumstances we may ask for an Assurance of Support from a third party in Australia. Such a document can only be obtained upon request from a case officer and only after an application has been lodged.
Now our case is slightly different as he has been working for most of the last two years and was just recently made redundant, and my job is currently on the skills shortage list so in theory my employment prospects are good. We both wrote statements re past employment, future employment prospects in Australia, savings we both have in the bank (including copies of bank statements) to support ourselves and statements from his parents saying we can live with them if necessary. Immigration told us not to wait till he had a job to apply and maybe an AoS might be asked for in worse case scenario.

Am sure Wanderer has some advice here, or maybe its worth calling immigration? It certainly helped us. Sorry I cant be more specific to your own situation.

As caledonia indicates, Immi will look at the total picture including your employment prior to studying overseas, your partners employment record/prospects, if you will have somewhere lined up forinitial residence and yep, if an AoS is requested that is no great stumbling block for most people.

Main thing is to concentrate on your partner getting his application complete and well presented, read Booklet#1 and use the Checklist etc.
