Arrow Two vikings going to Oz - which visa?

Hi all

My girlfriend and I are planning to move to Australia for a few years (we are from Denmark). We are however not sure which visa we should apply for. We want to move there and start looking for a job once we get there - i.e. we have no sponsors, but have Australian friends we can live at for the first months.

My girlfriend has a master degree and I have a bachelor plus a business graduate degree. We are therefore both well educated and have well paid jobs - Anne is a training manager for a software company and I am a country manager for a telecom company.

Which direction should we take when it comes to visa?

Thank you so much in advance, we really appreciate it.

It is not quite so simple to just move and look for employment and the global financial crisis has brought about a significant review by the immigration department of the skilled visas system, new regulations about to be implemented in coming months.

There is a strong focus on employer sponsorship and if your friends can assist in locating at least one employer for either of you, if you are partners more so than just Gf/Bf the other can go on the same visa as a secondary applicant.

Have a look starting from Workers - Visas & Immigration , the two options being the employer sponsorship [ still for skilled people ] or the Professionals & Other second heading which refers to independent immigration but in the current situation, a very lengthy process is to be expected.
The What's New link on the first page of second heading/link and the Minister's announcement of 08Feb. will give you several other links describing the changes intended.

A much more simple process that may suit you for a temporary stay of up to two years if you are both under 31 YO would be the WHV.
Visa Options - Working Holiday - Visas & Immigration

It is an online application with granting very quick if you are eligible and though a WHV is only valid for 12 months, you can read there about doing three months regional seasonal work [ or you can do WWOOF Australia ] to get a second WHV.

There is far greater flexibility than with an employer sponsor visa for with those your visa is only good while you remain employed with a sponsor so it can tie you down.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, it does indeed seem, that we have to look for a job in Oz before we move there. We will brush up our resumes and start cracking.

Thanks again
