Current Timeline for 176 visa

Hello, everyone. Currently I am holding 457 visa and I just lodged my state (SA) sponsored 176 visa on 21th April 2010. I am an electronics engineer which is on the CSL. Any idea how long it takes for my 176 visa?

Thanks very much.

It is a bit dificult to say really, given that Immi are in the midst of introducing changes and apparently doing a bit of internal restructuring of their workforce in regard to handling the GSM changes that are to be implemented.
The CSL will be non existent with the introduction of the new SOL which is scheduled for 01 July, hopefully the State Migration Plans and overall priority and points formats being known by then too, the SMPs seen as something of a higher priority in lieu of the CSL occupations.

When the format of changes were announced on 08February, there was recognition given to there being prioritisation under the CSL approach and the need for transition in respect to priorities and details on that are yet to be announced though the new SOL was announced today.

You may want to have a look at the situation when the SMPs are announced and see if there is going to be a need to sign up re the SA SMP to give higher priority than the standard sponsorship or whether transitional arrangements will see CSL sponsored people moved on to SMPs.

Aside from internal staffing and the transitional/prioritising issues there could be Character clearance delays if you are from what is classed a jigh risk country for that can involve checks by authorities outside of Immi and the same authority [ ASIO ] have resources especially stretched at the moment given processing needed with increased arrivals lodging claims to be considered as refugees.

Of course the numbers applying will also have a great impact and Immi's suspension of offshore applications is partially because of higher numbers which are in excess of numbers budgeted, there already being a substantial queue.
So if you are from a HR country, it could be even well beyond a year before your application is considered/processed.

Have you considered the possibility of an employer sponsored PR visa and if you are employed now as an electronics engineer it may be of benefit to talk to your employer.

Thank you very much, Wanderer, for your quick and detail reply. Yes, I am employed as an electronics engineer, from Jan 2009, but I'd rather apply 176 instead of the employer sponsored visa.

Unfortunately, I am from the HR country . My co-workers applied 885 visa (from HR country as well) in Jan 2010 and got the visa in two months. But since I didn't get any degree in Oz (although I hold a Ph.D. in Europe), I couldn't apply for any on-shore visa which is clearly faster.

By the way, what is SA SMP stands for?

I got the case officer today! Less than one month since I lodged my application, much faster than I expect.

In his email, he requests us to provide police check and medical check. We have no problem to provide the police check, but for medical check, since my wife got pregnant 3 month ago, she couldn't not take the X-ray test until end of Oct. Is it possible for her to exempt the X-ray test? She did one in 2009 when she apply the 457 visa with me. If not, can I get my medical test done first and try to get my visa granted first? We really need it ASAP because we need the PR to claim our first home grant . It will expire by the end of this year.

Hi,

I sent off for WA state sponsorship at the beginning of Jan this year. I have already passed the Trade Recognition stage.

Do you have any idea how long it may take to get a reply?

Thanks

Hi, I have no idea about WA. I applied SA state sponsorship. On SA immi website, it states that the timeline for PR sponshorship is 4 weeks. I got the sponshorship at the end of the 4th week.

Hi yzphit,
Did your wife exempt from the X-ray test? I might have the same concern in case I got pregnant within the visa application time frame. As you know, things are uncertain nowadays it's really clueless how long we need to wait.

No, the case officer told us the X-ray is a must. So we have to wait...

Sorry yzphit, I must have missed your query in May re the Xray and your wife is now more advanced obviously.
It does seem the norm that pregnancy will make doctors not recommend that an Xray is done but in emergencies they do occur and Xrays can be done using lead shields to reduce the risk of harm to an unborn.
But seeing as you've missed the boat now anyway re home grant I imagine you're still just waiting.
If you have not yet bought a house you may even find prices could still drop if the economy has further hiccups and so perhaps some advantage in having waited.
