Question Temporary visa 485-post study work stream. MBA completed, but have not graduated yet

Hi all my name is Charina.

I recently completed my masters in business administration-international management major in health services management last november 8, 2013. I was hoping to graduate this December but the application for graduation had closed 3 months ago. I asked my uni when the next graduation date is, they said it's in February 2014, but upon inquiring to apply, the applications have closed and again i wasn't able to apply. so the next graduation is in May 2014.

my concern is that my visa will expire in March 2014 and i am hoping to apply for a temporary visa 485-post study work stream around February 2014. I don't know what to do since i have no choice but to take the May 2014 graduation. i have asked for a completion letter plus my transcript and i have them now and it says that i am eligible to graduate.

I would just like to know if upon lodging my application for visa 485 should i have graduated then? does the immigration need a diploma? i have read the document checklist and it says that i have to submit a completion letter, transcript and COE. it only states that i need to submit a diploma if im applying for the graduate work stream which i'm not. or do i also need to 'gradute' and not just 'complete' the degree?

i'm very worried and would appreciate it if you could share anything that would enlighten me regarding my situation. thank you so much!

Hi Charina,
Congratulations on the completion of your MBA. Completion of your course does not mean formal conferral of the degree. So you should really look into making the application ASAP with a note that you will provide evidence of completion as soon as its available. Don't forget you have to make the 485 application within 6 months of completion.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for that. I'm just so frustrated about the graduation system. applications close months before semesters end. in my case, I didn't have much choice on the graduation date that i could apply for because when i asked my uni, they said that applications were closed on December 6, 2013. That was the exact date when i got the results of my final exams so there's no chance at all to apply for the February 2014 graduation.

are all graduation system like this? or is it just my uni? (i study in University of Ballarat but lectures are done in partner provider in the city, Academies Australasia Polytechnic.

and do i need to include in my visa application some sort of a formal letter from my uni stating that i have applied to graduate in May 2013?

thanks alot!

So long as you have completed your course successfully, you should go ahead. Waiting around for Unis to respond can take awhile.
