Family visa number restrictions

I noticed in the family visa timeline thread someone saying the number of visas granted in any year was restricted. I have looked on the immi website but cant see anything more on this. Has anyone else heard of this?

.....will be ready for grant but it will not be finalised until after 1 July. There is a quota of 60,300 for family visa applications for the 2009/2010 year and there are only a few places left.

Hi there,

I have read about quotas on the DIAC site. You can find more info. here:

Australian Immigration Fact Sheet 21. Managing the Migration Program

and here:

Australian Immigration Fact Sheet 20. Migration Program Planning Levels

I'm not totally sure about the difference between 'capping' and reaching the quota limit, but I guess that means immigration still accepts partner visa applications even when the quota is reached for that year, but they hold it and grant it the next year (possibly this is what the poster you quoted above is experiencing with their application?)

Yes but in that link it say:
Family Stream
Partner category visas:

Partner (subclasses 309/100 and 820/801) visas cannot be capped.
Prospective Marriage (fianc&#233 (subclass 300) visas may be subject to capping.

Does it mean that the partner visa will be processed normally ?

Partner visas will be processed within what budgeted numbers allow and if the total numbers for family stream visas is being approached towards the end of the financial year, there will be a slowing of processing.
Capping is a separate approach that can be instigated if and when the need is seen to arise.
