Visa 189 - Radiographer

Hi,

I'm a Radiographer interested to apply for visa 189. My current visa (skilled graduate - 485) will expire in May 2014. I graduated from Australian uni and at the moment I'm working towards getting my skill assessment letter from Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR). The requirement to get this skill assessed from AIR (as I graduated from Australian uni) is to work 1 year full time as a Radiographer through National Professional Development Program - NPDP (counted as 48 weeks) in Australia. After finishing that 1 year, I will then get a skill assessment letter and be a fully qualified Radiographer. My first question is, can I claim this 1 year as 1 year Australia work experience (5 points)? AIR only needs 48 weeks but I can give a full 1 year (52 weeks) and even more from my employer as they are interested to keep me. By the end of January 2014, I will have the 1 year Australia work experience. Without this I will be missing 5 points (to get to 60 points). I've called immigration to ask about this and the person said I can only claim work experience post graduation. I mentioned that I cannot do NPDP and work as a graduate Radiographer unless I have finished my uni. After finishing uni and do NPDP, I then can have skill assessment letter and also be a qualified Radiographer. This concept seemed to confuse her and I don't know how else to explain to her. Another things is, what are the chances for Radiographer to be granted visa 189?

Thank you very much and look forward to your reply

I don’t believe you can claim the 1 year work experience. This is because your skills assessing body does not consider you skilled until you complete your 1 yr NPDP. The work experience claimed must be from when you are considered skilled.
