It will depend on the circumstances. There are a lot of people who get married outside Australia and stay apart for 6-12 months while they wait for their visa outcome. I do not think there is any fixed requirement that both of you have to live logether./ It should be fina as long as you are prepared with the answer to one simple question - Why are you living apart?

If you move to some regional place for work and your wife stays on in Sydney, the first question immigration will ask is why? Is she working or studying in Sydney? Is your job short-term and you will come back to Syndey after some specified time duration? Are you planning to move with your wife to your new place of employment and just some time to work things out?

In the end, if you have a reasonable story explaining your living apart, it should not be a problem.
