use an agent or go it alone?

i'm in the process of looking at immigration agents and was wondering if its better to apply for a visa by myself...saving myself a small fortune!!

My profession is on SOL and was considering trying for an independent visa or maybe a state sponsered.

Any advice??

It is really a decision to be based on whether you want to save some money Vs not being prepared to commit time to understanding the process yourself and thus not being comfortable about doing the application.
Even if you opt for an agent, there is still going to be a requirement for you to get documentation together to provide to an agent and I still suggest that people do familiarise themselves with the process so they know what to expect of an agent for it is not unknown for people to be disappointed with agents.
If you check the information via Workers - Visas & Immigration you will find under each visa sections on eligibility and applying for this visa that clearly outline what is required, a lot of links to be checked on as well.
What's New? Recent Changes in General Skilled Migration for instance has information on processing priority changes that are being introduced this year, most state sponsorship applications closed for the moment whilst states get their State Migration Plans finalised and approved by the Immigration Minister.
Having a federal election next month could delay that too.

Do your homework first. If you don't understand the visa process use the free initial consultations with agents to help you find the right path and get yourself more informed, also use the forums.
If you do want to use an agent make sure they, specifically, the person doing the work for you is registered. Saying that I agent was requested and got struck off shortly after I engaged them. Check the mara website, go and see them in person and get references from client. Some people leave online references migrationagentreviews dot com or check the forums. You can get help from the Australian consulate; they really helped me with giving me direction when I was having problems with my agent. The advice is free, subject to premium rate call, which obviously only works when you call from work .
It is a mine field of complexity, but it can be done. My case was complex but I got here in the end, good things are worth putting in the effort for. Good luck
