Tempoary Visa for Partner

HI,

I would be grateful if someone could give me some advice.

I would like to sponsor my partner as we are planning to go to Australia next year.

My status is as follows:

I am an Australian and my girlfriend is Argentina.

We are in a relationship for 1.5 years.
We spent the last 7 months travelling and living together in New Zealand. (She is on a holiday working visa)

Do we need to have lived together for 1 year before we can apply.? Would it be necessary to extend our stay in NZ to accommodate this ?

Is it better to apply now or should she fly to Australia with me on as tourist visa and apply then ?

How long does it normally take to get the visa granted?

Thanks for any advice...cheers

Unless you are eligible for a waiver, you do need the 12 months relationship, all details to be found via Family - Visas & Immigration
Processing times are variable but if you are able to stay longer in New Zealand together, you may find it quicker and it will be cheaper from there.
If she comes in on a tourist visa, you'll likely find it will have a NO Further Stay condition on it and so she would still need to go outside of Australia to apply.

Thank you very much. You say 12 month relationship ? We have 1.5 years together ( i was in Argentina for 6 months but we did not share the apartment). Do you mean 12 living together relationship ?

So, is it necessary be living together for 12 months ? Is it really such an important criteria that we should change our plans so that we do spend 12 months actually living together. ?

If we do decide to go this way and apply , would it complicate things if i go to Australia first and then she would follow me there after the visit is granted ?

You need to look at the visa information in detail, the eligibility requirements there very clear and some CAQ for the 12 months relationship.
From what you say, you may meet the requirements already but it is more than just saying you have been together for so long as you need evidence to back that up.
You will see a reference to Booklet #1 and so read that too and then you'll see above a sticky thread by elkitten on her experience of applying.
Your best bet is to take some time to read all you can, print off an application form and a Checklist to do a dummy run so as you can see how you are placed and what information you need to be collating.
There is no problem with your partner applying from abroad and you as a sponsor being in Australia.
