I do not know how many may be in the same boat bridgie but as for State sponsorship at the moment the boats have hardly got on to the slip rail for launching.
You may be aware of all the changes that were being developed throughout the latter half of 2009 and earlier part of 2010 and the new structure announced for implementation as of 01July 2010.
The only problem with it all is that the states/territories had to get their act together in regard to sponsorship and State Migration Plans which none have as yet, though they had since February this year to get organised.
Most states including WA closed their sponsorship activities to await finalising the SMPs it seems.
The SMPs need Immigration minister approval and since we had an election last month and a new minister just appointed, I do not think too much has occurred on that front and may not for a few weeks at least.
So if your occupation is on the WA SMP when it is announced and you get your sponsorship application in quickly [ and important to do that as there will be many waiting like you and so there is likely to be a flood of applications ] and you will need a new ANZSCO coded assessment - http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/_pdf/sol-schedule4.pdf , you could have about 12 months or so after that to get your immigration application approved and a visa granted.
So if you still have an ASCO coded assessment, I would now while you wait find out from the assessing authority what you need to do to get a ANZSCO coded assessment as some rganisations may offer a reasonably simple transitional issue.

Your situation may be even further complicated for if your visa application already submitted did not carry sufficient points to be considered without sponsorship, ie. if it did not have 120 points and so you require sponsorship, you may likely find that a new visa application will be necessary as you will not be able to support an ASCO coded visa application with an ANZSCO coded sponsorship.
I have not actually seen any reports as such of that being the case and so prior to even getting a new assessment for a sponsorship, I'd send off a post lodgement enquiry to Immi to seek clarification on that.
http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/forms/gsm/
Be interested in their response and it'll be of assistance to others in the same boat.

permanent visa

Thanks for the info Wanderer, much appreciated.
We actually have our application for WA State sponsorship applied for since August 2009, does this still mean that we will need a new ANZSCO coded assessment?

Thanks again

And extremely long wait and I'd suggest in the first instance you se if you can find out from WA what the situation is with that.
They may say you'll need to apply for a new one with an ANZSCO code or perhaps if there is an ANZSCO code which identically matches the ASCO code, you may have a chance of getting a sponsorship with an ANZSCO code but I'd not count on it.
Either way, once you find out what the state sponsorship situation will be, it'll then possibly not gel too well with the new Immi structure and it'll be best to send off an enquiry to Immi to clarify what the situation will be.

Permanent Visa

Thanks Wanderer, We have recieved word that we wont need to change from ASCO code to ANZSCO code, so that is a good relief. We have to wait and see if our occupation is on WA list and if so it should be all systems go. Please God. Hopefully WA release this information very soon as it is such a frustrating wait!

Thanks for your info
