help with door to port moving companies?

Hi All!!
Has anyone shipped their belongings from the West Coast USA to Sydney australia?
We don't have a lot - just half a dozen medium boxes, a 7x10 rug and a couple of guitars......unfortunately we do not live by a port, and are being quoted $1300 to ship from Oregon to Syd.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to get our meagre belongings to Australia without it costing an arm and a leg?
any ideas welcome.............

All you could do Chrissie is check a few different agents and hope there are some cheaper prices you can get but international freight is not all that cheap and it could be they work on a minimum price in some cases just to cover all the handling and any repackaging etc.
And then there's going to be the pick up and all the paperwork/overheads too.

thanks Wanderer - unfortunately you are spot on. Minimum rates, plus not living near a port, involves more costs getting it to a port.
Having spent all week on-line and on the phone to different companies, even Fedex, in a moment of madness, and again today - I think I am going to pay for extra baggage on the plane. air New Zealand is 1 free checked bag, then $75 for 1st extra bag and $175 for 2nd (23kg each bag)....don't know what to do about my rug.......thanks for that - I needed a reality check.
Chrissie

How about you roll the rug up nice and tight and seeing as they take sporting stuff like surfboards, they might consider taking a rug, maybe wrapped around a fishing rod! if need be.
There are companies like http://www.sevenseasworldwide.com/homepage/default.aspx for smaller quantities but I didn't mention them earlier because they are also quite expensive but if you have not compared them yet, maybe it'll not hurt.
Once you have your lowest cost, maybe it's a decision to be made on bulkier weightier items other than your rug for not much point in bringing out a $20 pair of jeans if it's going to cost that in shipping and you cam buy the same ones for $30 here and they'll be new and maybe even cheaper given the Aussie$$$ climb against the greenback.

Great idea Wanderer, oddly enough I woke up this morning with an image of my rug rolled up and wrapped and going through as checked luggage!!!!!! How's THAT for synchronicity! I will weigh it, and take your advice - I think there's a lot of clothes I can let go of........
