Afp confusion for 820 visa application

I've been in Oz for a month now and I'm starting to put together my paper work for the application for Visa 820. I assumed I HAD to do an AFP check as part of the application, but from reading posts on here I'm not not sure whether I need to do it now or wait until it's requested?

Can anyone clear this up for me please as the websites are just sending me round in circles!!

Thanks in advance.

Only need the police clearances for anywhere you have lived 12 months or more. Therefore you won't need an AFP unless you have been in Oz previously and it has totaled more than 12 months. You will also need one for the UK or anywhere else you have lived for 12 months or more.

I was in Oz for 11 months three years ago and I'll been in oz at least two or three by the time we're ready to apply so I'll need to do an AFP then?

Because I'm a UK citizen I assume then it's a UK Police Check I need to do as that's where I am emigrating from?

LouElla, just make note that police checks are valid for 12 months only, so if you decide to do them now or soon, they may expire before your application is processed, meaning you'd need to do them again.

This is why some people say to wait till they ask for it, but honestly for low risk countries I think it's worth doing them sooner and risking the possibility of having to do them again. They can take a while to get from some countries.

I think the Australian one is quick but I don't know about UK.

We've pretty much got all the paper work filled in, it's just the extras like Medical/Police Check & Statements from Family/Friends we need to focus on now. We're hoping once we get all that back we'll be officially ready to send it off.

I read that the Oz one takes 15 days. I've done basic ones for jobs with the UK but never a full one so I'm expecting that to take a while, I'll need to look into it. I'm hoping the fact I'm not in the country atm won't be an issue too :/

Not sure whether you are aware of this, they updates the application forms frequently, so you might want to check whether you are using the latest version when you lodge your application.

Thanks, I'm constantly checking the website and making sure nothings changed, we had started a prospective marriage visa (that we didn't go through with) a couple years ago and I ran across that issue then so I'm much more wary now and make a point of double checking.
