Your employment/income situation will not directly affect your right to be a sponsor but you may be required to provide an AoS which can be family/rellies or friends.
You'll find information about that in the applying section of a visa that involves sponsorship, perhaps needing to look at the actual application form notes for explanation.
If you cannot come up with an AoS then it is likely a visa application may be refused.

Hi Rosie,

An AoS in and Assurance of Support. It is administered in cooperation with Centrelink and is brought into action when DIAC thinks the applicant may become a burden to the social welfare system. This is determined by looking at the applicant's job history, level of education and English ability among other things.

Look at the DIAC site for more information:

http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/990i...of-support.htm

or go directly to the centrelink site and get more information there about it:

http://www.centrelink.gov.au/interne...ce_support.htm
