2 year 457 visa

Hi i have been sponserd for two years on a 457 visa. In ten months time my visa is up. was just wondering when it comes to applying for pr how to go about it. I have heard that if i don't want to go through the vetasses route that i will have to extend my 457 sponsorship and as soon as i go past the two years i can apply for pr as i cant apply for it even a day before ..just wondering is there any truth in this and any advice on this subject would be great
Thanks michael
