What is the ASIO check for?

I have seen at another forum migrant applicants talking about having to wait while their application was sent for an ASIO check. Yet I can see nowhere about who this applies to. Is an ASIO check done on everyone or just certain people or even certain countries? Has anyone else heard about this, Ive seen nothing about this before.

Countries are considered to be either High Risk or Low Risk and ASIO security checks can be applicable for people from High Risk countries, those not on the ETA list - Visitors – Online Applications – Applications & Forms
You can see some indicaction of visa processing tiomes on the Client Service Charter, also linked on that page.

Thanks for that. There are very few countries on that list, seems more like mainly NATO ones. It says 10 months on the DIAC site yet the australian embassy told us 4-6 months at worse. I take it the embassy statement would be more accurate, with the site just giving a general guide? At least I hope so.
