Getting statements from inlaws is not everything and in fact there is quite a bit more involved.
Start doing some reading up using the partner visa info you'll find via. Migrants - Visas & Immigration , making good use of the eligibility and applying sections, the latter having a good Checklist and then there's also Booklet #1 but take it step by step and have some patience and you may finally get there.
But you do need some commitment to taking on the task.

The 300 should be more straight forward in the initial stages than a defacto for it does not have the requirement of having been in a residing together relationship but if you have evidence of that, all the better and you may want to even consider doing a partner visa straight off if you have suitable evidence for that will save the hastle of organising the marriage and then applying for the partner visa all within nine months and if you're intending to get married, why not do it anyway before you apply for the partner visa?
