ETA to student visa! Help!

Hi all,

Have been on this site and have read of people in similar situations to mine, but not exactly!

I am currently in Melbourne on an ETA. I am from London, with a British passport. Am hoping to study here in Feb of this year and currently awaiting a reply from RMIT University on whether or not I have been accepted into a degree program here. (Have applied only recently to RMIT, hence no reply yet!)

My ETA runs out on the 16th Feb 2011. Can I apply for a onshore student visa now?

I am going on holiday (to the US) on the 25th Jan 2011 and due to land back in Oz on the 8th Feb 2011. Obviously, I am planning on leaving again a week later since I have to - as my ETA runs out on the 16th Feb. Can I only apply for a student visa while abroad? (assuming I get accepted into RMIT). If not, can I apply for a student visa now while being in Australia and being here on an ETA?

Was also thinking of just extending my holiday in the US until after the 16th Feb, so I wouldn't have to fly back to Oz, just to fly out again a week later!

Sorry if this is confusing and boring - any help at all would be very much appreciated!!!

You can apply for a student visa from within Australia but you do need a letter of acceptance to an approved course.
You should also have a good read of the Student Visa information to see if there will be any issues in regard to all eligibility requirements.

Thanks Wanderer!

Can I apply for a student visa online while being here (when I get the electronic confirmation of enrollment that is), which would allow me to apply online anyway.

Am re-reading the Student Visa booklet as I type!

So am I right in thinking I can be on an ETA in Australia and still apply for a student visa while in Australia too?

Yes, I've never heard of ETAs having a No Further Stay condition on them as some eVisas or tourist visas do so if that is the case there should be no reason why you cannot apply for another visa and obviously it'll pay to check that you'll meet all other eligibility requirements.
