Our 309 visa letter from immigration in Vienna states processing times are 9-12 months (my husband is a citizen of a high risk country). We are up to our 11th month this month and have not heard anything since the initial confirmation of lodgement.
The letter states that e-mail is the preferred method of corespondance, I have sent 2 in the past and received no reply????
What are everyone's views & experiences on contacting or not contacting via e-mail or phone?

Processing times can vary between high-risk to low-risk countries.

is it a good idea to contact and check on the progress or should we just wait? I have had some people say do not call, and others say it won't hurt to check. I just don't know what to do?
I guess that the one time I did contact to enquire I was told it's in processing. Because we are already at 11 months I don't know if I should plan another trip in july? Or wait.

Waiting is the best idea because certain COs do not liked to be poked. Though, I wonder why you did not get any response of your email. Which country are you applying from?

From Bosnia and the application is in Vienna.
Since not receiving a reply via e-mail I contacted via telephone, however that was last year around September and I have not heard anything since. Thats exactly what I thought the CO don't like to be interrupted

If you're from Bosnia, there's your answer. External security checks are going to make your application take longer than it usually would. Unfortunately there's really nothing you can do to speed it up.

Thanks CollegeGirl, that's exactly what I thought. We have sent one police clearance with the application and an updated one recently. The medical we are aware is already approved. Do you think we should contact to check on the progress or is it something the CO cannot give a timeframe to either?

Is there any hope it may be finalised at the 12 month mark?

With high-risk countries, there is no deadline really. I've sadly seen cases go above the 12 months even. Just keep your fingers crossed and I hope your visa is granted sooner than later.

The CO has no control over external security checks and how long they take, unfortunately. They won't be able to tell you anything except that security checks are ongoing.
