student visa evidence of fund question

The student visa checklist states the following:

Provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover yourself and your family for the first 36 months of stay in Australia
what if the total duration of the course is 12 or 18 months. Isn't it sufficient to provide evidence of fund (living cost + tution) for total duration of the course?
