Either way, if you specified in your application that you were planning on making some cute little things on eBay to sell as a thank you for the hosts then they'll deny your tourist visa. It doesn't meet the criteria.

Either way, whatever happens - contact the embassy you lodged at and talk to them. You've been waiting way too long for an answer, it may have already been lost in the postal system on it's way back to you. Good luck, but please don't break the rules.
I applied online, the consulate in Vancouver is the nearest Australian government body to me, I'll try them. the embassy is in Ottawa, I guess if the consulate can't do anything that's my next contact.

only reason I said about making things to sell was the application asked if I had any means of financial support while I was there, so I assumed they wanted me to have some means of obtaining funds. and since getting a job somewhere was out of the question that would be the next best thing. not only so I could buy things for myself but also to give back to my gracious hosts.

they also asked if I'd gotten a medical check up, and I know my health is something that could be important as they wouldn't want me getting sick and clogging up the queue in the hospital as a non resident, so I dropped over $300 doing that, only to find it wasn't necessary.

imo it really doesn't seem like the Aus gov't is very keen on having anyone entering the country. I'm dead set on it though, there's nothing here for me anymore.

Hi Joanie I know you live in Canada but I don't think you have said if you are a Canadian Citizen or not.If not then what country are you a citizen of?,that may be the problem.
Contacting the Consul in Vancouver is pointless as all visas are issued from the Australian High Commission in Ottowa.
Saying that you would work would certainly preclude you from being granted a tourist visa as tourists are expected to have sufficient funds to cover their trip.
You say that they asked for a medical exam, did they do this in writing or by email, as I suggest you contact the person who sent it and ask them about the progress of your application.
As far as letting people visit Australia, millions of tourists come every year so your refusal indicates something in your application has caused a problem.

I am a Canadian citizen. the application asked if I had undergone a medical check up, I asked my doctor about it and he referred me to a couple places for an exam, blood test, and x-ray. it was only after that I realised it wasn't necessary as I come from a low risk country.

and the visa is still processing, I have not yet been refused or accepted.

I personally didn't consider that crafting small jewellery items for sale on the internet would be classified as employment, but now that the subject has been covered I see how it can be classified as such.

Ok Joanie
In that case definitely call the High Commission in Ottawa and explain your situation. They certainly owe you an explanation.
