Cool Offshore Partner Visa application question....

My partner is Canadian and I am Australian. I am sponsoring him to Australia. We are in the process of finishing off the application (should be sent in nxt 2 weeks) and requesting for priority because of our personal circumstance. I am giving birth to our 1st child in June.

I spoke with Aust High Commission in Ottawa, and they said no problem to send cover letter for requesting priority, but must have valid reason. She told me the processing time for Partner Visa's is 6-9monmths on a usual basis without priority request.

I will fly back to Sydney in April due to pregnancy timeline and safe flight restrictions. However, my partner is following me June 1st. He has already purchased a 1 way ticket to Sydney - he did this thinking we would have a visa before June.. a bit naive but it's done now.. This was before we were told it was going to be 6-9months for visa processing.

Aust High Comm told me he can still fly into Australia on Tourist or ETA if his visa is still processing in Ottawa. But the catch was... he can't stay there to wait out his visa decision... but also added, that if it was granted while he was in Australia awaiting the birth of our baby (due June 21st) , his case officer would notify him of the 'nearest' international port to go and get his passport restamped with appropriate visa (309). I mentioned to her that would be N..Z. she agreed.

If someone can help clarify my query... What does he do or say to Customs in Australia with a one way ticket?? I know for a fact they will question him on why he has a 1 way ticket... Or should he buy a ticket back to Canada.. ?? It's difficult bc, our lease with our condo ends the day he leaves Canada, so he won't have anywhere to come back to if he has to...

Are there options that we can pursue here???

Any valid help will be much appreciated...

Lots of people fly into Australia with just a one way ticket for various reasons and with an immigration query which may not always come, it's best to just be honest about the situation - he is visiting because of you imminently giving birth and his partner visa is being processed for which he knows he has to depart to allow it to be granted.

A couple of things with that and any advice he gets will be before the partner visa is to be granted for it cannot be granted while he is in Australia.
On his flying to NZ intention, he'll need to have booked a flight out of NZ to a country he has a right of entry to and he'll not have that with the partner visa until he gets to NZ and it is granted so he does not want to be running out of time with an ETA or have to do two trips because of the ETA three months limitation so just to be safe on time he ought to apply for a six months tourist visa.
But he may want to leave that until closer to his own departure and if you get the partner visa in quick enough, sometimes marvellously quick processing does occur.
