Thanks again Mish.
I'm not sure what to do, were really close to getting the permanent visa but have had a very rough patch lately.
I'm not sure what I'm meant to do, the immi website is really really unhelpful. It says you must tell them if the relationship breaks down but who is meant to tell them? Sponsor or applicant? And are you meant to email them, fill in a form or just withdraw the sponsorship? There's totally conflicting advice online and I don't know what I'm meant to do

Hi All !

My partner submitted application offshore between end of February 2015 to beginning of March 2015 and was granted a 309 visa after 10 months, arrived in December 2015. His was eligible for 100 in end of February 2017, however, his agent suggested to wait two weeks after he eligibility date to apply for this visa, because this will speed up process apparently. 2 weeks (not including police check wait which is 1 week) later he was granted a PR, in April 2017.

JMac, I think before withdrawing the application, maybe speak with your partner again to see if they still want to go ahead with the application. If you are so close to getting a PR and have waited for this long and wasted so much money on it, it would be such a shame for it to be cancelled. Just my opinion. good luck !!

How on earth did you get PR in 2 weeks??! It's been a full year and we are still waiting.

My (ex) partner does stilll want to visa but I'm uncomfortable with it really... I mean we are still friends but When I say we are having a rough patch I mean we are living apart and it's unlikely we'll get back together :/

I would look at the financial obligations you are consenting to as a sponsor (see page 13) and let that help you make a decision. You may be liable to criminal charges.

I know what I would do... I think you know what to do too.

Res, I'm not really concerned about what to do, so much as how to do it - there's no clear guidance on how to tell immi nor who should do it (sponsor or applicant or either)

JMac,

I know the US office requests all correspondence be by e-mail... "We prefer contact with this office concerning your application to be by email. We try to respond to all email enquiries within seven working days."

I think both of you should up-date them on your status. As a sponsor you are obligated to. E-mail them, someone will get back to you with more information.

Thanks
It's still really sad
Looking back, I started this thread years ago to have buddies wait it out with me, now I'm bowing out. Part of me is really mad that the whole process takes so bloody long because my (ex) partner should have his permanent visa by now. But I know that in the spirit of the visa, that's not really the point. Although the application process did come close to splitting us up several times, in the end it was something else out of both of our control.

Not quite sure the reason behind this but the "trick" worked for his previous applicant so he tried it for us and it worked as well. Are you also applying for Australia ?

Also, I agree with Res. Email them to find out further information about it and let them know th situation. Not sure what they will do in this case but what if all of the sudden the visa is granted ? 😮

If the visa was granted all of a sudden it could be good and bad! I'd be very happy for him as it's his dream to live in Aus but at the same time what if I fell in love with someone else and wanted to bring them to Aus? I'd have to wait for the 5 year waiting period if the current visa is granted, but no waiting period if it's not granted (as far as I can decipher the immigration guidance).
Ultimately I think I have to look after myself first in this instance, as much as I care about him, it's partly about integrity and partly about my future so ... yeah

Does anyone know what email address I should use? I can't find anything on the dbip website anywhere and the only emails I have from them are "noreply" correspondence emails
