Waiting to apply

Hello everybody,

My partner & I are about ready to apply for the partner visa offshore, however my partner is also considering returning to study sometime this year (if possible) or next - and is looking at applying as an international student to an Australian university.

So basically we're wondering whether it's worth applying now for the partner visa as we're ready just in case my partner isn't accepted into a course as an international student, or to wait until she is accepted into a course and apply onshore.

It seems more logical to wait to see what happens with the student visa but we're worried that we may be wasting time waiting. Would my partner be able to apply for a student visa if we have a partner visa pending?

You may want to consider looking at the cost of being an international student compared to living as a resident attending also.

We recently got ours. :-)
Congrats to you too!

Good to know Can I ask how long did they take to grant you the visa after your medical and police checks were submitted ?

If you apply for a student visa (a substantive visa) while waiting for a partner visa (another substantive visa), your student visa application will supersede
your partner visa application.

Note that if you apply onshore (subclass 820) instead, you will receive a bridging visa A which allows you to work and study.

Hope it helps.

Another quick question - does the department notify you when a CO is assigned to your application or do you only find out when the CO contacts you for information?

Cheers

No you donít automatically get notified until they ask you for more information such as police checks and medical. That is when they will write to you with their email, per our experience.

Has anyone seen a status update of "assessment in progress" on their immi account online application? Mine says "application received". I'm just curious if that is a good way to know if someone is looking at your application or if that status just changes to "approved" or "finalised" when the decision is made.
