I doubt a right wing government who might be almost as racist and xenophobic as the Johnson , Theresa May and the tories are in UK will react favourably as they are
probably anti family immigration too. In Uk , we have SKYPE families where the
children speak to their foreign parent abroad and rarely if ever see that parent . It was work of the evil Theresa May who attends church regularly but is devoid of even a modicum of empathy or compassion . let us hope aussie government does not go down this path but the huge visa fee tells the story ( wry smile ) . I have an old friend who was torn apart from his Thai wife after living in England together for 2 years and she failed the life in UK test ( it is like a pub quiz) brought in suddenly by TM . tragic !

It is considered that the huge visa fee is to try to cut down the numbers of applications, as there are too many applicants for the limited numbers of visas available.

I don't think it worked, still too many and long waiting times.

They have been granting about 44,000 partner visas each year in 2017 to 2019.

These were the average times for the 2018/19 year, and it shows that the offshore applications averaged being faster than the onshore ones.

Offshore applications:
10.6 months for subclass 309 (There were 14,847 subclass 309 visas finalised)
11.0 months for subclass 300 (There were 2,705 subclass 300 visas finalised)

Onshore applications:
16.3 months for subclass 820 (There were 26,118 subclass 820 visas finalised)

Upadte: 309/100 applicaton submitted 10/12/2019, processing in KL

We received a request for further information today. Specifically, a new police check for myself (aus citizen) as previously submitted is now 6+ months old. Also further "Evidence of your relationship with your spouse"... which is a bit hard to provide given that we have not been able to see each other since February. For this we plan to submit more chat logs, and fresh stat decs, and a cancelled plane ticket.

We are hoping this is evidence that our application is getting toward the final stages... however it has only been 9 months since we applied, so it is a surprise in a way.

A 309 visa holder is supposed to be able to travel to Australia.

From what i have read, a g2g Permit is for interstate travel.
