you can bring medication if you declare it (best to carry it in hand luggage to show them) and also put in your hand luggage the prescriptions for the items if you have one. I take meds all the time going overseas and never had any probs when i got back to Australia.

Yes, you can bring in personal use medication unless of course it is a prohibited substance and certainly best to have prescription advice with it if possible as well as declaring it.
If you have a look on Customs home page you will find what is prohibited.
By declaring it, the worse that could ever happen is that something will be confiscated but that is unlikely with personal medication.

when you are on the plane and on the way to australia the cabin crew will give you a yellow incoming passenger card, it asks lots of questions and one of them is about medication, just tick "yes" to that and when you hand in your passenger card at customs they will ask you about them. Make sure you don't go through the "nothing to declare" lane, go through the "something to declare" there are signs all the way telling you so you can't miss it
