Change of Relationship Situation

My girlfriend (US) has been living here on a defacto partner visa for almost a year and a half. We have recently become engaged and I'd like to know if we need to inform the immigration department or if the engagment or impending marriage (next year, after our temporary 2 year visa expires) will affect the partner visa process?

I tried to find the information on the immigration website but failed.

Hi there,

It says in the partner booklet that any changes in the relationship need to be relayed to DIAC ASAP. This includes break-ups, babies and getting married when applying for a de facto or before being granted a PMV.

If you have applied for a de facto visa orignally, then getting married changes your visa subclass. Once you notify them, your application will then be reconsidered for a straight out partner visa as a married couple.

Get in touch with your CO and let them know the good news
