IELTS Score

Hi, I had applied the EOI for subclass 189 and 190 under the skilled worker programme in May 2014. Three months passed by without any response or activity from the immigration authority. I then spoke to a consultant and she said that my points which totalled to 55 were inadequate for 189 but an addition if 5 for 190 were fine.

On further dissection she noticed that my IELTS score, although averaging 7 but had a 6.5 in writing and was loosing out on 10 points.

She suggested a retest as a solution, but what I need to understand is...why can't this be sufficient for 190?

Before I get back to preparing and sitting for IELTS one more time, can some suggest me if I can work things out with the current score?

Really need your help with this.

Thanks,
Sumit Bhatnagar

To get 10 points you need Proficient English.

"Proficient English: score of at least 7 on each of the four components of speaking, reading, listening and writing in an IELTS test"

The average score is meaningless, you need 7 in each component.

For 190 a lot of states accept a 6 or 6.5 score. Wouldn't it work with them?

Eligibility for the visa, and claiming points are 2 separate things. It may be sufficient to have 6 or 6.5 to be eligible for the visa. But if you want to claim points, you need to have all 7s for 10 points and all 8s for 20 points.

For the Visa SC 190 you must have (1) at least 55 points, and you must be nominated by a State or Territory. there are the Migration Regulations and no waivers are given.

Regarding Points for English the regulations state the the minimum requirement is Competent English (0), Proficient English (10) and Superior English (20).
Competent English is defined in Migration Regulation 1.15C as the result of test taken any time within the previous 3 years before the date of application, and had a minimum score of 6 in each band in either the general or academic test.

Proficient English is defined in Migration Regulation 1.15D as the result of test taken any time within the previous 3 years before the date of application, and had a minimum score of 7 in each band in either the general or academic test.

Superior English is defined in Migration Regulation 1.15EA as the result of test taken any time within the previous 3 years before the date of application, and had a minimum score of 8 in each band in either the general or academic test.

The fact that States will ask for a minimum of 6.5 in some occupations does not mean that they well accept less than 55 points.

Regards

I have a score of 60 for 190 and this comprises a 0 for English assessment. My first option was 189 and a 6.5 in writing has spoilt my score which had S8, L7.5 and R7.5. I want to keep reappearing the IELTS as a second option for now and just want to explore options with what I have in hand now.

My only concern with reappearing IELTS is that it may happen that other section score might get hit. I don't want to fall in the loop of appearing again and again.

I hope I was able to provide a better picture of what I have and what I am looking for

Hi Varun, Thanks for the encouraging words.

How much time did you wait before you got the state invitation?

I have been waiting for 3months now and am just left with one year of skill assessment validity left. So I yesterday booked a slot for IELTS.

I am not sure if I should take back the EOI that I have already submitted or let it stay in the system hoping for the best?
