on 456 moving to 457

Hi, I am currently in Australia on a 456 visa which is valid till the end of the year, now I need to convert this visa to subclass 457 as I have got a job/sponsorship from a local employer. My current visa does not have the condition 8503 (NO further stay) which means I can apply for visa change onshore. Now if I lodge my online application for 457 over here and then go back to my home country, will my 456 visa still remain valid till the processing of my new 457 visa. Secondly when I will be granted a 457, when would my passport be required for the visa sticker and where would i need to send it, the local high commission or back to Australia. I have heard that once a 457 visa is granted i would need to get back with in 28 days for getting the visa, does that imply that my 456 visa will remain valid even than?

I am really confused right now and need some quick advice.
