I can understand why they do it but surely other ways around it. I know it is because they won't pay taxes because wouldn't work (assuming around 60ish or so). But surely they could make people on that can't apply for Medicare or Centrelink benefits. Wouldn't that be cheaper?

Yes.. you are right I read in the news of ending all asylum detention and start processing their papers, what about those who are legally applied and paid the visa, followed all the requirements and still have to endure long and agony months of waiting.. we dont have voice. Boat people were given higher priority. And after that they will just sit relax and wait for their gov subsidity.. Without spending at all cost in processing their papers, UNFAIR.

I'm quite grateful that I didn't have to come here on a boat as an asylum seeker with limited options in life. But for the people who did how do you know that "they will just sit relax and wait for their gov subsidity.." Waiting for a visa decision is frustrating in so many ways but if someone that came here with nothing is passing me in the que I'm willing to wait for that.

Well you know what if you came to Australia on a boat you probably wouldn't have any money to pay your application fee.

That's because they have already spent their money on people smugglers to get on the boat.! It's not free you know ! It's certainly a kick in the teeth for everyone who has gone through the correct channels and waited.

I am sure those on old aged pensions think it is unfair too that they get less than asylum seekers and they have worked majority of their lives here.
