Spouse visa processing time almost a year - is this normal?!

Hi there,

It's almost a year since my husband and I applied for our spouse visa. We applied from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and he's from Algeria, which I'm very sure is responsible for the delay with the processing.

I've had a few people check into it and apparently they delay is with ASIO and their security checks. It also concerns me because his medicals which he did in Australia while he was here on tourist visa have now expired and I don't exactly want him travelling to Egypt to his nearest embassy to complete more.

Does anyone know if this is reasonable wait time, or has anyone had to wait over a year? I've been browsing the Visa Timeline thread since I applied and I don't think I've seen anyone wait that long.

We've had 2 weddings already (our registry office, big Italian) and soon a third in Algeria, and I'm getting tired of our lives hanging in limbo for this visa to come through.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Though you haven't seen many on this forum, there are lot of people who are going through the same thing, and some have been waiting even longer than you. And, the common thread seems to be the ASIO check. Once DIAC sends the form 80 to ASIO, it's out of their hands and DIAC can't make them hurry things along.

As for the health checks, they'll have to be done again after the first ones expire, so he would have to do them somewhere near him. Or, he could come and visit you and get them done in Australia?
