Looking for advice on spousal/marriage visa choice

Howdy folks! I'm a bit worried about Visa choices at the moment, and feel swamped by the veritable sea of information, so I was hoping I could appeal to the collective wisdom of these forums. Hell, even a harsh shooting down of potential options makes the (therefore more limited) options easier to decide between, so please be harsh.

My partner and I are in the following situation : I'm an Australia resident/citizen, and she's a Dutchie. We've been in a relationship together for the last two and a half years, with her living in Australia on a working holiday visa for the first year, and then a sequence of the two of us trading countries and living with the other on 3 month tourist visas over the following times. There were also large periods of long-distance relationship with her in Europe and myself being in Australia.

I recently asked her to marry me (and got a yes!), following which she had to head back to Europe. She's working over there to save money for a big wedding (in the Netherlands, hopefully May in 2012), and I'm working over in Australia. We were hoping that she'd be able to come back over in August of this year on a prospective marriage visa, so we'd be able to live together and work to save money for the wedding, before heading over for the big day. It looks like we've left it a bit late to apply though, as we just found out the average wait time is 3-6 months, ouch!

So, a few questions : Should she apply for an on-shore prospective marriage visa (while out of the country) and then enter the country on a tourist visa while waiting for the application to be granted, or should we apply for an off-shore prospective marriage visa (while out of the country), and do a quick hop-out to New Zealand on the date she has to be off-shore? I remember hearing that on the defacto visa you can work while the application is in process, is there any similar mechanism for fiancee visas?

I was a complete idiot and forgot to inform Centrelink of my relationship status for the first two years. It wouldn't have affected my payments (student), but when I finally did tell them they wrote it down as commencing in November of last year. Will this damage us with the prospective marriage visa? All of our stat decs, financial records and so forth indicate a much longer relationship. If my retardation shoots down our visa options, she'll kill me.

Sorry to post such a silly thread, but I'm feeling lost here and there are so many documents to read, all written in such legalese!

Hi,

First of all, the PMV can only be applied for offshore. You can get a tourist visa to allow her to visit Australia while it's being processed, but she has to be out of Australia when the PMV is granted. Once granted the PMV, you must get married within 9 months and apply onshore the temporary partner visa as a married couple.

As for the Centrelink thing, you can write a stat. dec explaining what you just said so that they know that you were de facto for longer than Centrelink records.
