Student and 457 visas

Hi,
My defacto spouse and I moved to Australia a year ago on his student visa. As he is postgraduate there are no limitations on my working hours and I have been working full time. I am now thinking of applying for a 457 visa as my current job may last longer than his degree program. However, we don't want to lose his student visa status for scholarship reasons. Can I get a 457 visa without affecting his student visa?

Thanks!
